How it Works

TIWL's trauma-informed certificate program hosts both physical and mental health professionals and all those actively working with individuals and communities that have experienced trauma. This program about redefining what strength means for you and your clients, we're not just checking a box.

This certificate equips clinicians with a trauma-informed, embodied framework to support regulation, resilience, and reconnection through strength training. Whether you're collaborating with coaches or exploring movement-based interventions yourself, TIWL offers the language, scope, and tools to guide clients with care.

What You’ll Learn That's Different

01. Explain the therapeutic rationale for integrating movement and strength work into trauma recovery, using shared language that clients and coaches can understand.

02. Identify how trauma shows up somatically through movement, and use these observations to inform your clinical formulation, tracking, and treatment planning.

03. Integrate trauma-informed therapeutic interventions including grounding/orienting, somatic tracking, and meaning-making - alongside movement-informed strategies (when within your scope) to support nervous system capacity, agency, and embodiment.

04. Use therapeutic focus and intentionality to help clients make meaning of their experiences in movement spaces and support challenging areas.

05. Apply trauma-informed consent, boundaries, and documentation when collaborating with coaches or referring a client to embodied movement work.

06. Assess readiness and safety for embodied work, including red flags, capacity indicators, and how to titrate or “dose” movement exposure clinically.

06. Hold space for reflection and integration by using questions and practices that support clients in translating movement insights into emotional and relational shifts.

07. Co-create interdisciplinary care with coaches, including shared treatment goals, communication rhythms, and a trauma-informed collaboration framework.

Real Tools for Real Clinical Situations:
What the Course Covers

"TIWL gave me language and structure to integrate movement into therapy—safely and ethically. It’s expanded my work and my confidence."

“As coaches, we hold space for more than just muscles. The Trauma-Informed Weight Lifting (TIWL) Certificate helps you do that with clarity, skill, and confidence.”

About Trauma Informed Weight Lifting

Your cohort is taught by a blend of licensed clinicians and certified strength coaches who live and breathe this interdisciplinary work.

TIWL is a body-first methodology for individuals and groups who have experienced trauma and adversity and does not involve a standard prescriptive sequence, weightlifting movements or one-size-fits-all programming. We believe that such an approach is antithetical to our understanding of complex trauma and the need to be attuned and responsive to the needs of those we work with.

Our Certificate Program offers a transformative trauma-informed approach that offers knowledge, strategies and skills to support embodiment, inclusivity, responsiveness, autonomy, and collaboration to provide safer and more therapeutic experiences for clients and athletes.

Trauma Informed Weight Lifting is committed to principles of practice that incorporate anti-oppressive and anti-racist frameworks (Do Less Harm) and values as well as trauma-informed and healing justice frameworks and values (Then Do Good).
