Edward Reynolds at the UNH Department of Communication is looking for is 1-2 trauma informed coaches who have completed the Trauma Informed Weight Lifting Training and who offer in-person small classes in the Greater Boston/Seacoast NH, Baltmore/Philly/NY or Montreal/Ottawa Area to open their classes up to a research study on the structures of interaction in trauma-informed strength and athletic coaching. We are looking to video record 2-3 classes, different sports or emphases or skill levels are welcome across the different sessions but not required. As disabled athletes ourselves, we would prefer to participate but likewise are happy to either record from the sidelines or setup equipment and return at the end of the class. We would obtain consent from all present, including coaches, athletes and any others who may be visible, with varying choices available for how recordings of them will be included in the study (De-identified, identifiable, highlighted, co-author). Consent can of course be revoked (details on this process will be provided).

The aim of the research is to explicate the ‘how’ of trauma informed coaching - what ways of speaking and practices of movement set it apart, in the moment, from traditional coaching modalities.

These recordings will be used in a UNH Honors project by Paige O’Neill who will also be present assisting in the collection of data and is intended for later analysis in other research projects. Recordings (of those who consent to this) may be placed online as part of teaching or research and may be shared with other researchers. We are looking to obtain recordings in August.

Some compensation will be available to coaches who participate, in the form of either $50 per session (at around 2 sessions per coach) or equivalent credit arrangements to be made available to athletes who participate (as discounts or session credits).
