Job Description
Trauma Informed Weight Lifting (TIWL) is a program of the Center for Trauma and Embodiment at JRI. TIWL is an embodied practice and intervention that is informed by the latest in neuroscience, physiology and trauma research. We are working to make weight lifting and fitness spaces & professionals trauma-informed, inclusive, and responsive to all bodies, experiences and identities. We do this through our training program, conducting innovative research and developing weight lifting programs to support healing and resilience-building.
The Youth Coach will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with TIWL Co-Directors, CFTE leadership and research partners on this exciting program. This position will allow for the unique opportunity to participate in program development, research planning and ongoing consultation as we launch two youth-serving programs in the Boston area. This is a grant-funded contract position that will require approximately 3-5 hours a week for a period of 3-5 months, with a possibility for a longer contract pending additional grant funding.
Key Job Responsibilities

Collaborate with TIWL Co-Directors to develop plans for weight lifting programs for trauma-impacted youth who are receiving care at two Justice Resource Institute facilities.

Facilitate coaching in individual and group formats for trauma-impacted youth, including programming.

Engage in innovative research exploring trauma informed weight lifting as an adjunctive treatment for complex trauma amongst youth. This may include participating in research planning meetings, completing qualitative assessments, participating in interviews, etc.

Participate in ongoing consultation with TIWL Co-Directors to support high quality service provision through these programs.

Participate in ongoing self-study and training around systemic trauma, systemic privilege and systemic oppression.
Requirements

Certificate in personal training or coaching required (e.g. NASM, ACE, NSCA, ACSM, USAW, etc.)

Minimum of 2-3 years of experience as a personal trainer or coach

Experience working with youth

Must have transportation to and from Lowell, MA and Lexington, MA

Demonstrated (and ongoing) commitment to trauma-informed, anti-oppressive and anti-racist practices

Must have completed TIWL’s 30-hour Foundations in Trauma Informed Weight Lifting training or must be able and willing to attend an upcoming TIWL training in September/October or December 2022.
